'Candid' driver says 'I'm drunk'

A 78-year-old man who crashed his car in the Borders told police there was no point asking him what had happened because he was drunk, a court heard.

John Miller, of Eyemouth, admitted driving on the Coldingham to Eyemouth road while his alcohol content was almost double the legal limit.

At Duns Sheriff Court, he was banned for one year and fined £235.

Sheriff Kevin Drummond said Miller's reply to the police was one of the most "candid" explanations he had heard.

The sheriff was told that Miller had been drinking after going to visit a friend, whom he knew was dying.

His friend died two days later.
