Police have appealed for witnesses to come forward

Police have appealed for witnesses after an 18-year-old woman was raped in the centre of Glasgow.

The attack happened in the early hours of New Year's Day after the woman had been in the Bamboo nightclub in West Regent Street.

She left on her own and was attacked in West Nile Street at about 0230 GMT, forced into Sauchiehall Lane and raped.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Police said she was left distressed and traumatised.

The suspect is described as white, 35 to 40-years-old, approximately 6ft tall, with a chubby build, short light brown hair.

He was wearing a black cardigan with a white shirt underneath and blue jeans.

The victim is described as being 5ft 4in tall, of medium build and with shoulder length brown hair.

She was wearing a knee length grey coat, black leggings and black shorts.

Det Supt Duncan Cameron of Strathclyde Police said appealed for anyone who could held identify the attacker to come forward.

He added: "This was a very frightening experience for this woman. She is still very distressed and has been traumatised by the whole incident.

"One line of enquiry we are pursuing is that the woman may have been followed out of Bamboo nightclub by the suspect and I would appeal to anyone who may have been in the premises, who may have seen a male who matches the description of the suspect, to come forward.

"I would also appeal to members of the public, who were in the area of West Nile Street/Sauchiehall Lane between 0200 GMT and 0300 GMT on New Year's Day, who may have seen the man and the woman or witnessed any kind of disturbance to contact the police."
