What the Scottish Sunday papers say

Prime Minister Gordon Brown's future rests with "third choice" Margaret Curran, according to Scotland on Sunday.

It says that Labour's battle to win the Glasgow East by-election and save Mr Brown's premiership looked increasingly desperate after party chiefs were forced to parachute in a new big-hitting candidate.

The Sunday Herald claims Ms Curran, a former Holyrood cabinet minister, is the "fourth choice" candidate and says she has been handed Labour's "poisoned chalice".

The Sunday Post also leads on Labour's "shock move" to draft in an MSP after the leading contender pulled out of the race.

Brown and out is the headline in the Mail on Sunday.

It says four candidates turned down his personal pleas for them to stand in the Glasgow East by-election.

Meanwhile, the Sunday Mail says a shattered mum has spoken for the first time of her "overwhelming pain" at finding the bodies of her two blood-stained children at their home.

A twisted rapist has been secretly released into a sleepy Scots town, according to the News of the World.

The paper says it is costing the public £15,000 a month to keep tabs on him.

Illegal assisted suicides are now being carried out in Scotland, the Sunday Express reveals.
