A number of titles have the resignation of Work and Pensions Secretary Peter Hain on their front pages.

The Herald says that fears were raised within Labour circles that the resignation of Mr Hain could lead to a "domino effect" of departures from Gordon Brown's government and the party leadership.

"Can it get any worse, Gordon?" reads the headline in The Scotsman.

The Press and Journal says that the resignation has turned the spotlight on to Scottish Labour leader Wendy Alexander.

The Scottish Daily Mail's headline on the story reads "Will Wendy now fall on her sword?" and the Scottish Daily Express reports that there was renewed pressure on the Labour leader in Scotland to go.

Ministers ordered an urgent inquiry into the regime at Castle Huntly near Dundee after the rape of a schoolgirl by a man on the run from the controversial open prison, writes The Courier.
