Ministers plan for flu pandemic

The virus strain must be identified before vaccine is produced
More than £100m is to be spent over three years stockpiling medicine to prepare Scotland for pandemic flu.

Experts said an outbreak was inevitable and a decision has been taken to step up Scotland's readiness.

The cash will be spent on anti-viral medicine and antibiotics, as well as surgical masks and respirators for health staff.

The plans, unveiled at Holyrood by Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon, match measures being taken across the UK.

"Pandemic flu is one of the most serious health risks facing the modern world, with significant potential social and economic impacts," said Ms Sturgeon.

'Advanced planning'

"While experts agree there is a high probability of pandemic flu occurring, the timing is impossible to predict."

Ministers have signed advance contracts with pharmaceutical companies to guarantee a supply of vaccine - although this cannot be developed until the strain of virus is identified.

Anti-virals are seen as the first line of defence against pandemic flu.

Chief Medical Officer, Dr Harry Burns, pointed out that the World Health Organisation described UK planning for a flu pandemic as among the most advanced in the world - but warned that nobody could afford to be complacent.
