Ex US spy base sold
RAF Edzell
Surveillance officers were based at Edzell
A former RAF base in Angus which played a leading role in the United States' spy network during the Cold War is being bought in a multi-million pound deal.

The Edzell base near Brechin has lain empty for several years but plans are now being drawn up which could create jobs on the site.

RAF Edzell was home to United States intelligence officers throughout the Cold War.

Soviet subs

They used state-of-the-art communications equipment to spy on Soviet submarines.

After the collapse of the Soviet Union the Americans moved out and 200 civilian jobs were lost.

The 440-acre site was put on the market three years ago with a price tag of 5m.

There are plans to attract companies to the site
It is now being bought by a Scottish agricultural contractor DM Carnegie which hopes to attract other firms to move onto the base creating badly-needed jobs in the area.

A director, Alan Carnegie, said: "We can now speak to companies which want to come in, or people who have expressed an interest in the past but were waiting to see this concluded before they took that any further.

'Enormous potential'

"The potential is enormous here. For example there is one of the operations buildings of 30, 000 square feet, which would be an ideal computer centre.

"Because of the size of the site people should bear in mind that development will be long-term and nothing will happen overnight."

The deal is expected to be finalised by the end of the month.
