Harvester sister boats detained
![]() The St Keverne was detained in Mallaig
Two sister ships of the Solway Harvester , which sank in the Irish Sea with the loss of seven crew, have been detained in port by safety authorities.
The Maritime and Coastguard Agency said it had detained the two vessels, the Karianda and the St. Keverne, in Mallaig after uncovering a number of safety defects, some similar to those found on the sunken Solway Harvester.
John Garner, the head of maritime operations for the agency said:"The watertight integrity of the main deck has been compromised on these vessels, which is unacceptable."
The Kirkcudbright based Solway Harvester sank close to the Isle of Man in January. A report by the Marine Accident Investigation Branch found several safety shortcomings. The investigation found that a hatch on the Harvester's main deck had been left open and that its two lifeboats had been untethered and unserviced since 1996.
The list of defects aboard the Karianda and St. Keverne included faulty seals on hatches, out-of-date escape hatch clips and navigation charts, and fire extinguishers in need of servicing.
Both vessels, which are scallop dredgers like the Solway Harvester, are owned by the same company which operated the sunken boat, Hull-based Jack Robinson Trawlers Limited. Minor deficiencies Mr Garner said the investigation was carried out as part of an inspection programme recommended after the loss of the Solway Harvester. Two other ships belonging to the same fleet, the Torbach-N and the Solway Ranger, were found to have minor deficiencies, but they were not judged serious enough to cause their detention. Mr Garner said: "Fishing vessel owners should be in no doubt that we will take action where we discover poorly maintained vessels which may compromise safety and the lives of fishermen." |
