Trad music winners are announced

Kathleen MacInnes was named top Gaelic singer

The winners of the Scots Trad Music Awards have been announced after more than 70,000 votes were cast online by people from across the world.

Enthusiasts from Canada, South Africa, New Zealand, Russia, Argentina and the US were among those who took part.

People could also send postal votes for the awards, which are now in their fourth year.

Donny Munro and Donald Shaw were among the winners at the ceremony in the Nevis Centre in Fort William.

Munro, the former front man with Runrig, took home the prize for album of the year.

Shaw, the newly appointed artistic consultant to the Celtic Connections festival, was named the composer of the year.

Jenna Cumming was up-and-coming artist of the year

Jenna Cumming, a former Mod gold medallist, was chosen as the up-and-coming artist of the year.

The other winners included the World Pipe Band Championships in Glasgow, which was voted the event of the year; Kathleen MacInnes, who was named Gaelic singer of the year; and Sylvia Barnes, who was Scots singer of the year. The McCalmans were the best live act.

Nine people were inducted into the hall of fame, including Aly Bain, the late Jimmy Shand and broadcaster Robby Shepherd, who was also awarded the Hamish Henderson Services to Traditional Music Award.

Organiser Simon Thoumire said the number of votes cast was up by 10,000 on the previous year.

"The internet has enabled us to receive votes from all over the world and prove that Scottish traditional music is hugely popular around the globe," he said.

The online vote took place in conjunction with BBC Scotland's Celtic Roots website.
