First Minister Donald Dewar has welcomed Irish President Mary McAleese to Edinburgh at the start of a visit to the UK.

Mr Dewar hosted a reception for Mrs McAleese at the Signet Library.

The visit to Edinburgh is the first stop on a five-day trip which includes engagements at Buckingham Palace.

The president, one of the first heads of state officially to visit Scotland since devolution, is spending two days in Edinburgh, Glasgow and Aberdeen.

Referring to the prospect of permanent peace in Northern Ireland and the growing bond between her country and Scotland, she said: "My going to Scotland is a token of the kind of interest and excitement in this great adventure that is opening up in front of us."

Guest of honour

While in Aberdeen, Mrs McAleese will inaugurate the Research Institute of Scottish and Irish Studies at the University of Aberdeen.

She will also receive an honorary degree from the university.

Mrs McAleese will be guest of honour at a reception hosted by Glasgow Lord Provost Alex Mosson in the city chambers.

She is also to receive an honorary degree from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons in Glasgow.
