A pilot and his passenger have survived a helicopter crash in a field near Glassford in South Lanarkshire.

It is understood one man suffered head injuries and the other man, described as "walking wounded", is thought to have lacerations to his hand.

They were taken to Hairmyres Hospital in East Kilbride for treatment, where they have been detained.

Emergency services were called out when the privately-owned aircraft came down at about 1015 BST.

The Robinson R44 came down at Burnwynd Farm, by Hamilton Road, near Glassford, Strathaven.

A spokesman for Strathclyde Fire and Rescue said the four-seater aircraft was travelling from Glassford to Macrahanish on the Kintyre peninsula when it crashed shortly after take-off.

He added: "Strathclyde Fire and Rescue immediately mobilised three rescue appliances from Strathaven and East Kilbride and they were quickly on the scene to find the pilot and the male passenger already free from the wreckage.

"Fire personnel dealt with the casualties until the arrival of the paramedics whilst other crews assessed the crash scene to ensure no other persons were involved and also prevent any possible escalation of the incident."

There is no indication as to the cause of the crash at this stage, although conditions were said to have been very misty in the area.
