Doctors' plea to cut teenage pregnancies

Scotland has one of the highest teen pregnancy rates in Europe

Medical experts are warning more needs to be done to cut the number of teenage pregnancies in Scotland which has one of the worst records in Europe.

Teen pregnancy
The plea comes despite the latest statistics showing that the number of young Scots girls having babies has fallen.

The many factors associated with teenage pregnancies will come under close inspection at a special conference on Tuesday in Aberdeen.

It is being held to mark the 100th anniversary of maternity care pioneer Dugald Baird.

He won international plaudits for the work he carried out at Aberdeen Maternity Hospital where major improvements were made to care given to expectant mothers and their babies.

Recent figures show a slight fall in the number of teenage pregnancies and healthcare professionals say although that is nothing to be proud of it is an early indicator that new strategies are working.
