A German student died and four people were taken to hospital after a blaze at a tourist hostel on Skye.

Two men and two women were taken to Broadford Hospital suffering from smoke inhalation. One of the women suffered severe burns to her hands.

The identity of the dead woman has not been released. Another woman and two children escaped unhurt, police said.

A joint fire service and police investigation has begun into the cause of the blaze.

The Scottish Ambulance Service said crews from Kyle of Lochalsh and Portree attended the incident.

A police spokesman said: "The identity of the deceased is not known at this time and no details will be released until all next of kin have been informed."
