A 33-year-old woman has died giving birth to twin girls, it has emerged.
Adele McIntosh died on Tuesday, 28 March at the Simpson Memorial Maternity Pavilion at Edinburgh Royal Infirmary.
A Lothian and Borders Police spokeswoman said they had been made aware of the death and that there were no suspicious circumstances.
It is understood Miss McIntosh, from Gracemount, Edinburgh, suffered a heart attack while delivering the second baby girl.
'Very sad'
Both babies are being cared for by a relative.
Her funeral is being held on Wednesday at Gorebridge near Edinburgh.
David Bolton, chief operating officer of university hospitals division, NHS Lothian, said: "NHS Lothian can confirm that an investigation is underway into the tragic death of a young woman at the Simpson Maternity Unit in the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh.
"This is a very sad case and our thoughts are with the family at this time. Perinatal deaths are extremely rare.
"This death has been reported to the appropriate authorities."
