New Newsnight tune's Scots roots

A new version of George Fenton's famous Newsnight theme tune has been recorded in Glasgow for the programme's Inside Latin America week.

The Latin version was recorded on 12 March - the day when Glasgow saw eight inches of snowfall.

BBC Scotland's David Allison produced the piece and played bass and ukulele.

The line-up also featured classical guitarist Allan Neave and percussionist Ted McKenna. Newsnight will broadcast from South America from Monday.

Mr Allison said it was strange to record such warm-sounding music in freezing temperatures.

He said: "It felt as bizarre as it must feel for people trying to record a Christmas number one in July."

Allan Neave has worked with many influential composers, including James MacMillan.

Ted McKenna is the drummer for the Sensational Alex Harvey Band.

The new tune will feature on Newsnight from 3 to 6 April.
