Supermarket expansion work starts
The former Galashiels textile college
Work has started to prepare the site for the new Tesco
Preliminary work has begun in preparation for the creation of a large Tesco superstore in Galashiels.

The existing store site is to be cleared along with nearby government buildings - a move which has sparked a local protest campaign.

Protesters want a public inquiry into the fate of the former textile college because of its historical importance.

The supermarket firm plans to expand on the site and says the move will help to create a vibrant future for the town.

Tesco will continue to operate during the building work and a temporary store is to be created in part of the existing car park.

Attempts to have the property listed have failed and the application to build the new store has already been approved.
