A man from Edinburgh kept his wife's dead body in a freezer because he could not bear to be parted from her, police have revealed.
Veronica Irvine, 74, died of natural causes in the city on Valentine's Day.
Her husband Desmond, also 74, put her body in a wheelchair and took her by taxi to their holiday home in Berwick-upon-Tweed, Northumberland.
Police discovered her body 12 days later. A report is being sent to the procurator fiscal.
The widower kept Mrs Irvine in a chest freezer in their holiday home in the Northumberland town and stayed there grieving.
Relatives are believed to have contacted police when they became concerned at the lack of notification about any funeral arrangements. No arrest has been made.
A spokesman for Lothian and Borders Police said: "A 74-year-old woman died in Edinburgh on 14 February and her body was recovered in a house in Berwick-upon-Tweed on 26 February.
"There are no suspicious circumstances and the details surrounding the incident have been passed to the procurator fiscal."
