'Take steps' towards fitter city
People walking
Councillors are being urged to get people walking
People in Edinburgh should be encouraged to travel around the city by walking, councillors have been told.

Edinburgh City Council officials say it is free, efficient and does not create any pollution.

They have recommended that walking should be an important part of the capital's local transport strategy.

A report to members next week says that walking is the most reliable form of transport over short distances and has a positive impact on health.

The initiatives being recommended range from opening more pedestrian crossings to mending damaged pavements and backing schemes like Safer Routes to School.

For tourists and other visitors, the officials suggest there should be a better system of on-street signs.

They add that there have already been significant improvements in road safety through existing walking policies.
