A swimmer who drowned in an incident in the River Ericht in Perthshire has been named by police.

Scott Beattie, 21, from Blairgowrie, got into difficulties in the river on Tuesday - the same day that two men drowned in separate incidents.

Police recovered a 23-year-old's body after a search for a missing swimmer in Loch Lomond on Tuesday.

And a 28-year-old man drowned after trying to swim across the River Tay with two friends.

His companions both managed to reach the other side.

The incidents prompted Tayside Police to issue a warning to people about swimming in such warm temperatures.

One man rescued

A spokesman said: "We wish to remind everyone that despite the very warm air temperatures at the moment, the river and loch water temperatures are still very cold and can quickly debilitate even a strong swimmer."

The force resumed its search of the River Ericht, near Blairgowrie, at first light on Wednesday.

Police were alerted at about 2120 BST on Tuesday when they received a call from the ambulance service about two men who were in the water near a camp site at Cargill's Leap.

One man was rescued by a search and rescue helicopter and taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee.

Police said on Wednesday morning that they had found a body.

In the other incidents, a man drowned in Loch Lomond after getting into difficulties between Balloch Castle Country Park and Pier Road on the waterside.

An underwater search unit was called at about 1535 BST as holidaymakers looked on.

The man's friend, who was swimming with him at the time, left the water safely and did not require hospital treatment.

The victim's body was recovered in an area near Pier Road.

Tay death

Strathclyde Police said a report would be sent to the procurator fiscal.

Tayside officers and a rescue helicopter from RAF Lossiemouth conducted a search for the day's other victim after the alarm was raised on the River Tay.

The helicopter crew spotted a body at the bottom of the river and managed to pull the man from the water.

He was flown to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee but pronounced dead on arrival.
