UK: Scotland Last day of by-election campaigning ![]() Labour's George Robertson is Hamilton South's out-going MP The 12 candidates fighting to win the Hamilton South by-election enter into the final full day of campaigning on Wednesday. Voting begins on Thursday morning, so time is running out for the would-be Westminster MPs to find favour with the electorate of the Scottish constituency. The Scottish National Party will be hoping for a repeat of the 1967 by-election victory when it pulled off a political coup by seizing the parliamentary seat of Hamilton.
Now, 32 years later, her daughter Annabelle is hoping to repeat the success. The election, called following Defence Secretary George Robertson's elevation to the House of Lords prior to his appointment as the new Nato secretary general, is the first major test for Labour and the SNP since the creation of the Scottish Parliament earlier this year. Scottish Conservative Leader David McLetchie and chairman Raymond Robertson will join their candidate Charles Ferguson in Hamilton town centre after their morning press conference. Ms Ewing will be accompanied by SNP Deputy Leader John Swinney when she meets voters at the Burnbank Centre in Hamilton. And Liberal Democrat candidate Marilyne McLaren will be supported by MSPs George Lyon and Keith Raffan, who will accompany her to the town's Hillhouse and Ernock Community Centre on Wednesday morning. Labour hopeful Bill Tynan will have Alistair Darling by his side on the last day of the campaign. Child poverty The Social Security Secretary is expected to take the opportunity to promote the UK Government's new pledge to rid Britain of child poverty.
