Train named after late gunner Tam
Staff Sergeant Thomas McKay

A train has been named after Tam the Gun, the man famous for firing the One O'Clock gun in Edinburgh.

Staff Sergeant Tam McKay died last month after a battle against cancer.

GNER said it was approached by friends and family before Tam's death and decided to go ahead with naming the engine after him.

Tam worked as a steward on trains between Edinburgh and London before his days as district gunner. GNER said he had been a great Scottish ambassador.

Hornby is also planning to commission a limited edition train set with a Tam the Gun engine from spring next year.

The father-of-three had worked as Edinburgh's district gunner for nearly 26 years.

He continued to fire the daily signal until he became ill earlier this year.

His widow, Joyce McKay, carried out the naming at a ceremony at Edinburgh's Waverley Station.

GNER's operations manager in Scotland, Tim Armour, said: "This specially-named train will very much keep the memory of Tam the Gun alive for many years to come as it speeds along the GNER route between Scotland and England."
