Boy, 15, charged with race attack
A 15-year-old boy has been arrested in connection with a "racially-motivated" assault on an Englishman, police said.

Office worker Daniel Rothero, 22, from the West Midlands, was allegedly attacked by a gang in Midlothian after they heard his English accent.

The incident took place at Loanhead Memorial Park, south east of Edinburgh, at about 1050 GMT on Saturday.

Mr Rothero was treated in Edinburgh Royal Infirmary for a broken nose and a fractured eye socket.

Public assistance

Lothian and Borders Police said the 15-year-old had been charged with serious assault and that the attack was now being treated as racially motivated.

"As a result of the elements that have since been brought up (in the press), we are now dealing with it from a racist point of view," a spokesman said.

"It has been as a direct result of public assistance that has resulted in this positive outcome.

"We would urge anyone else who was involved to contact the police."

Officers were following up inquiries and said they were confident that other people involved in the incident would be traced.
