Subway workers to stage walkout
Glasgow underground train
SPT hopes to run a limited service on Thursday
Workers on Glasgow's subway look set to stage a 24-hour strike on Thursday after pay talks broke down.

Negotiations between the Transport & General Workers Union (T&G) and Strathclyde Passenger Transport (SPT) ended without agreement on Tuesday.

SPT said it was very disappointed that the T&G had not accepted its "generous offer", which it said would see staff getting an immediate 7.9%.

A further 1.5% would be paid when new holiday rosters were agreed, it said.

SPT said that the two-year deal, which would also include an above inflation rise next year, was dependent on productivity and flexibility improvements.

It said that new rosters would "even out" holidays and reduce unnecessary overtime payments.

The T&G said that talks broke down at 2100 BST on Tuesday after hours of negotiation designed to the avert the planned walkout.

About 41,000 use the Glasgow Subway each day.

SPT said it was hoping to run a limited subway shuttle on Thursday between Buchanan Street and Hillhead.

Free buses will be available every 10 minutes between Shields Road and St Enoch and between Partick and Govan.

Season ticket holders will be able to catch the First Scotrail train from Partick to Queen Street and parking at subway car parks will be free.
