Cessna overshoots runway

The Cessna came to rest on the foreshore by Sumburgh Airport

Two men have escaped unhurt after their Cessna light aircraft overshot the end of a runway and nearly crashed into the sea.

The plane, which was carrying mail to the Shetland Isles, came to rest inches from the water at Sumburgh Airport on Monday.

The BenAir Cessna Caravan skidded over airport's main access road after failing to stop at the end of the runway.

The plane was later reported to be lying on rocks with waves lapping at its nose.

The Norwegian crew who were onboard the plane were shaken but unhurt by the incident.

The Cessna is a 12-seater which has been converted to carry mail to the Shetland Islands.

The incident happened at about 1130 BST as the plane attempted to land from an east to west direction.

Weather conditions at the time were reported to be overcast with some light showers.

The airport's emergency services were turned out and a full report on the incident will be prepared for the Air Accident Investigation Bureau.

A Cessna 404 crashed close to Glasgow Airport on Friday, just moments after taking off for Aberdeen, killing eight people and leaving three more seriously injured.
