Royal collection goes on display
Queen Mother's exhibition
The exhibition runs until September
The first exhibition of art from the Queen Mother's collection has opened to the public in Edinburgh.

More than 70 drawings and watercolours by artists ranging from Thomas Gainsborough to John Bratby are on show at the Palace of Holyroodhouse.

The exhibition highlights the Queen Mother's patronage of contemporary artists, many of whom became friends.

The images on display range from events of personal and national significance to portraits and figure studies.

They include some of the series of watercolour views of Windsor by John Piper, which were commissioned by the Queen Mother.

The other works on show in the Queen's Gallery include watercolours by Hugh Casson, a former president of the Royal Academy, and paintings of Glamis Castle and the Castle of Mey.

The exhibition runs until 25 September and is due to move to Buckingham Palace next year.
