Scottish entrepreneurs have been urged to look to China for new business opportunities.

First Minister Jack McConnell made the call at a conference in Edinburgh aimed at raising awareness of the world's fastest-growing economy.

He told businesses that they would not regret any decision to capitalise on the opportunities available in China.

He also announced the appointment of Lucy Watkins as first secretary of the new Scottish Affairs Office in Beijing.

The 38-year-old former Edinburgh University student will take up the three-year post on secondment from the British Council.

Follow example

Mr McConnell organised the China Challenge Conference following a visit to Scotland's 16th largest export market last year.

"Last October I saw for myself how successful some Scottish companies have already been in China and I want other companies to follow their example," he told delegates.

"If Scottish businesses seize this chance to expand their markets, they will not regret it.

"But success in China needs a consistent long-term commitment. Through educational and cultural partnerships, and support for ambitious businesses, we will help more Scottish companies achieve that success."
