Ice warning after fresh snowfalls

Heavy snow caused widespread disruption on Wednesday
Drivers have been warned that widespread black ice poses a danger on Scotland's roads on Thursday morning.

Drifting snow was said to be a problem on some cross-border routes in the south east, while a series of accidents led to lengthy tailbacks on the M8.

All main routes were open, although some side roads and cross country routes in Aberdeenshire were blocked.

Most schools were open across the country, although dozens in Fife were closed for a second day.

Forecasters were predicting a few light flurries of snow in the east during the day.

In Fife, one of the areas worst hit by the weather, 41 schools were closed on Thursday along with eight in Aberdeenshire. All schools In Dundee and East and Midlothian are open as normal.

More than 400 schools were forced to shut on Wednesday after heavy snowfalls across the east of Scotland.

All classrooms lay empty in Midlothian, with a further 113 closed in Fife and 96 shut in Aberdeenshire.

Lessons in East Lothian, Falkirk, Angus and Perth and Kinross also suffered as snow blanketed the regions.
