Celebrities make a splash for dolphins

Many species of whales and dolphins are found in Scottish waters

Dozens of house-hold names - including Sean Connery and Rolf Harris - have stepped in to help a charity which protects whales and dolphins in Scottish waters.

The celebrities have been donating items to the Hebridean Whale and Dolphin Trust for a massive charity auction.

The seas off the Hebrides are the most important habitat for the sea mammals in Europe, with 23 different species either visiting or resident there. They range from tiny harbour porpoises to the gigantic blue whale.

'Worthwhile cause'

Star items at the auction, which is being at the end of August in Tobermory on the Isle of Mull, include the signed typewriter that author Douglas Adams used to write Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, as well as an unpublished proof of Ben Elton's new book Inconceivable.

Other celebrities who have pledged to help include Paul McCartney and John Cleese.

"We are very grateful to all those who have given donations, and are still waiting for others to come in," said trust spokeswoman Cally Fleming.

"Everyone is giving to a very worthwhile cause, and we hope to raise a lot of money on the day".

A full listing of the items being auctioned - and detailed of the auction itself - is available on the trust's website.
