Police hunt killer of 93-year-old
Margaret Weir

Police are appealing for witnesses as they hunt the killer of a 93-year-old widow found dead in her Glasgow flat.

Margaret Weir was found at about 0800 GMT on Christmas Eve morning in a flat on Raglan Street at St George's Cross.

A spokeswoman for Strathclyde Police said a post mortem examination confirmed the woman had been murdered.

Detective Superintendent Kenny Watters described the killing as a "cowardly act".

"This was a particularly violent attack and I find it despicable that a lady who has lived through two world wars is killed in such a manner", he said.

Mr Watters believes the killer may have broken into Mrs Weir's flat three hours before her body was discovered.

He said: "Inquiries are at an early stage.

"However, it would appear that there were sounds of a disturbance in the area of the flats around 5am... and I am anxious to speak to anyone who was in the area around that time to come forward."
