Hoon attacked over 'Tartan' quote
Defence Secretary Geoff Hoon
Geoff Hoon is in the line of fire after defending MoD proposals
The Defence Secretary has been accused of showing contempt after referring to plans to merge the Scottish regiments as "the Tartan question".

Opposition parties said Geoff Hoon had been incredibly insensitive when he made the remark while defending MoD over the controversial proposals.

The campaign group Save the Scottish Regiments said Mr Hoon had been "crass and insensitive". Mr Hoon said the plans were necessary to ensure an effective modern army.

The minister was quoting the secretary of state for war in 1881 Hugh Childers, who implied the War Office was neglecting important issues to worry about the tartan patterns.

Opposition politicians said to imply tartan was the only reason to save the regiments was ridiculous.
