Text message classes for over 50s
Mobile phone class
Help in navigating various mobile phone tools was provided
Lessons in sending mobile phone text messages have been held for a group of over 50s in Glasgow.

A total of 20 mature students at Strathclyde University's Senior Studies Institute took part in a tutorial on the various uses of a mobile phone.

The class was held in the city by four "phone trainers" from the mobile phone company Orange.

As well as text message lessons, attendees were also taught how to download mobile pictures and ringtones.

Students were also shown how to send pictures as text messages to friends and family on the day.

'Great success'

The two-hour class, originally planned as a one-off pilot, was said to be so successful that plans are already under way for more.

A spokeswoman for Orange said the company hoped to make the lessons for those aged 50 and over a regular occurrence at the university.

Stuart Kemp, of the Senior Studies Institute, added: "The trial class was a great success and has proved the need for more of its kind.

Those who took part described the day as worthwhile
"The SSI offers a wide range of courses and seminars in Art, Languages, History and IT. Using mobile phones effectively is a natural add on to our IT related classes."

Pip MacLennan, of Orange, said it was the first time Orange staff had been released from stores to work with groups outside of retail outlets.

She said: "The concept of phone trainers has worked well within our stores for over a year.

"But this is the first time we have worked outside of a store and with a group, in Scotland."

She added: "We thought the 50 plus generation would especially appreciate the tuition.

"Many have children and grandchildren they would like to stay in touch with through different mediums such as text, yet find mobile telephony confusing.

"We had a great day with the group in Glasgow and received lots of positive feedback from all those who took part.

"We hope that this will be the first of regular classes in the future."
