Tayna Koolmatrie and her son can stay with her partner
An Australian family facing deportation from Shetland has won its fight to stay on the islands.

BBC Scotland has learned the Home Office has allowed Tayna Koolmatrie and her son Magnus-Che to stay with her Shetland-born partner, Davy Thomason.

However, the fight continues to stop Hazel Minn and her adopted sons from Burma being deported.

More than 6,000 islanders have signed a petition supporting both families and to fight their deportation.

Home Office review

The Home Office confirmed it would review their cases back in April.

The minister for immigration undertook to look at their details provided additional information was brought forward.

Local MP Alistair Carmichael had been lobbying the government department on their behalf which led to this initial breakthrough.

At the time he claimed the nature and volume of support apparent within the local community had opened up "positive" new avenues within each of the cases.
