Parachutist plummets to his death

A 39-year-old parachutist has fallen 2,500ft to his death in Perthshire.

The man was taking part in a group jump at Strathallan airfield when the incident happened on Sunday evening.

According to Tayside Police the man "appeared to become detached from parachute equipment" and his death is not being treated as suspicious.

The man, whose name has not been released, was one of 14 parachutists who had boarded a Dornier G92 aircraft for a competition at 2115 BST.

Rescue teams were called in to search for the man when the alarm was raised.

A specialist search and rescue dog team assisted by a helicopter crew from RAF Kinloss combed the area throughout the night.

The man's body was found at 0500 BST on Monday at a farm a quarter of a mile from the airstrip.

A police spokesman said there appeared to be no suspicious circumstances and a full report was being prepared for the procurator fiscal, in line with procedures for all sudden deaths.

A spokesman for Skydive Strathallan, which operates at the airfield, said: "Yesterday evening at 9.15pm there was a parachuting fatality at the Scottish Parachute Club, the circumstances of which are being investigated by the police and the British Parachute Association.

"Both those authorities have not concluded their investigations and we eagerly await their conclusions.

"The deceased was a 39-year-old male who was resident in Scotland and was visiting as part of a competition."
