Child and man die in road crash
A four-year-old boy from Northern Ireland and a Scottish man have died in a road accident in Ayrshire.

James Michael Hayes, from Omagh, County Tyrone, died in hospital following the crash between a car and a motorcycle outside the village of Maybole at about 1230 GMT on Monday.

David Thomson, 28, who was riding the motorcycle, died at the scene.

Police said a Peugeot 106 car and a Yamaha motorcycle collided on the A77 between Maybole and Kirkoswald.

Three other men and another three-year-old boy, who are also from Northern Ireland, were in the car and are being treated in Ayr hospital.

A 21-year-old man from County Down is said to be in a critical condition while another man, also 21, is described as "stable".

It is understood the people travelling in the car had been visiting relatives in Scotland.

A police spokesman said: "The 21-year-old rear seat passenger is still detained in hospital where staff describe his condition as critical.

"The others in the car, the male driver, a male passenger and a young boy, suffered minor injuries."

Police have appealed to eyewitnesses to contact them.

Sergeant David Carballo said: "This road would have been quite busy at this time and I would ask that anyone who witnessed the crash to contact the Traffic Department at Ayr on telephone number 01292 664140."
