Lewis and Emma are new favourites

Choosing a new arrival's name can take a lot of thought

Lewis and Emma have replaced Jack and Chloe as Scotland's most popular baby names.

The new favourites for children born in 2003 have been revealed by the General Register Office for Scotland.

In the boys' list, Jack slipped back to second, followed by Cameron, James and Kyle. For the girls, Emma came ahead of Ellie, Amy, Sophie and Chloe.

By mid-December nearly 25,000 boys' names and 23,700 girls' names had been registered north of the border.

The rankings were based on the first forenames recorded on the birth register, with 760 boys named Lewis and 632 girls named Emma.

Jack and Chloe had spent the last four years as the top choice for parents.

Boys' names dropping out of the top 100 were Gary, Charles, Joe, Finn and Bradley, while Lisa, Alice, Nicola, Hollie, Fiona, Catriona and Eleanor all slipped from the girls' list.

Lewis headed the pack in 12 of Scotland's 32 local council areas, although it failed to make it into the top spots in the Western Isles.

Jade was a major faller among names for girls, dropping down 51 places to 87th.

The 10 most popular boys' names in 2003, in order, were Lewis, Jack, Cameron, James, Kyle, Ryan, Ben, Callum, Matthew, with Jamie and Adam tenth equal.

The 10 most popular girls' names, in order, were Emma, Ellie, Amy, Sophie, Chloe, Erin, Rachel, Lucy, Lauren and Katie.

Other names growing in popularity included Ben, Logan, Ethan, Owen, Niamh, Mia, Isla, Grace, Daisy and Orla.

Jack and Emily were the most popular names in England in 2003.
