The party has held onto power in Edinburgh and Glasgow but failed to form an administration in Aberdeen, Dundee and Fife.

Labour also regained control of Clackmannanshire, West Dunbartonshire and Renfrewshire, while holding on to East and North Ayrshire and East and West Lothian.

But it lost South Ayrshire to no overall control, the Conservatives picking up two seats.

The Liberal Democrats won control of Inverclyde.

But in a bad day for the party in the Borders, council leader John Scott lost his seat to an independent candidate, Mary Beck, and the party dropped from 14 councillors to eight.

The Conservatives were the main beneficiaries, increasing their representation from three to 10. Independents now have 15 representatives.

There is no change in Aberdeenshire where there is no overall control, with the same result in East Dunbartonshire and East Renfrewshire.

There is no overall control in Dumfries and Galloway, although Labour is now the largest party with 14 councillors.

Independent-run Argyll & Bute remains unchanged as does Labour-controlled Midlothian and North and South Lanarkshire.

Moray, Shetland, Orkney, Highland and Western Isles remain in independent hands.

The Scottish National Party has retained Angus and is the largest group in Dundee but missed its targets in Perth and Falkirk.
