5m boost for sport projects
Squash
Funding will support a large variety of sports
The Sportscotland Lottery Fund has announced investment of more than 5m in projects across the country.

Sportscotland said the awards were aimed at priority areas, to ensure communities that most needed the facilities received the highest level of support.

The single largest grant of 1.5m is for the re-development of the Nicolson Lewis Sport Centre in Stornoway.

The money will help fund a new sports centre with six badminton courts, games hall, six lane swimming pool with moveable floor, fitness suite and squash court.

Alasdair Macrae, chairman of Western Isles Council's (Comhairle nan Eilean Siar) arts and leisure committee, said it was a huge investment in the future.

"I am delighted that we are now well on track to putting in place the necessary funding for what will be one of the premier sports facilities in the north of Scotland," he added.

'Commitment and vision'

Other projects to benefit include 275,000 for an indoor mountaineering centre in Kinlochleven, 500,000 for a swimming pool and fitness centre in Hamilton and 147,000 for a golf development in Bishopbriggs.

Ian Robson, chief executive of Sportscotland, said: "Sportscotland has a commitment and a vision to make Scotland a great sporting nation not just in terms of medals but by increasing participation across all ages and social backgrounds.

"Today's announcement of over 5.2m will go some way to helping us achieve that."
