Student falls to his death
Lothian and Borders Police headquarters
Police say Mr Crawley slipped and fell from the drainpipe
A university student has fallen to his death after climbing a drainpipe to get access to his flat after a night out.

Police in Edinburgh said that the body of Karol Crawley, 22, was found in West Maitland Street, at 1145GMT on Wednesday by a cleaner.

It is thought that the student had lost his keys after a night out in the city and was attempting to get back into his flat when he slipped and fell.

Mr Crawley, originally from Portrush, Northern Ireland, was a fourth-year combined studies student at Heriot-Watt University.

University staff were shocked at his death.

A spokeswoman said: "We are deeply saddened by this news and our thoughts are with Karol's family at this very sad time."

The last reported sighting of Mr Crawley was at 0200GMT on Tuesday after an evening with friends.

He was reported missing by concerned flatmates on Wednesday morning.

Lothian and Borders Police said they were treating his death as a tragic accident.

It is not known how long Mr Crawley's body had been lying in the backyard of the tenement.

A spokesman said: "It is known that he was seen in the town and in a pub, and that he lost his keys.

"It appears he slipped and fell after he attempted to get into flat by climbing up the drainpipe."

A report was due to be submitted to the procurator fiscal.
