Probe started after fire kills two
The fire damaged house
The cause of the blaze is still being investigated
An investigation has been launched into a house fire which claimed the lives of two people - feared to be a mother and daughter.

Police have started probing the blaze at Craigmile Road, Torphins, in Aberdeenshire.

Grampian Fire Brigade and Grampian Police said they were unable to confirm the identities of the two victims.

The blaze, which was reported at 0630BST, continued for more than four hours until the property, called Kirkbrae, was completely gutted.

The blaze broke out early on Saturday
A police spokesman said: "We cannot confirm that they were a mother and daughter.

"We are still trying to make formal identifications of the people."

He said it was also "too early to say" whether the fire was suspicious though he insisted it had been "very serious".

He also said an inquiry team was working at the scene of the incident with the fire crews and called on any witnesses who had not spoken with the police to come forward.

The spokesman was unable to confirm claims that a man in the house had managed to flee the building and escape injury.

A spokeswoman for Grampian Fire Brigade said the two victims had been pronounced dead at the scene.

She said six units had been called to the house including four engines, a support unit and a water carrier.

She said the vehicles had been called from Banchory, Aboyne, Alford, Stonehaven and Aberdeen.
