Hunt supporters lobby Labour conference
Foxhunt
Bills are going through in London and Edinburgh
Delegates at Labour's spring in Glasgow conference will be targeted by fox-hunting supporters on Saturday.

The Scottish Countryside Alliance plans to demonstrate outside the conference venue in Glasgow to protest about moves to ban fox hunting.

The group, which hopes several hundred people will take part in the demonstration, also says the government is not doing enough to help their communities.

Campaigners say they will be highlighting issues of concern such as the closure of rural post offices..

However, the government insists it understands the concerns of people in rural areas and that it is trying to help them.

MPs in England have backed a ban on hunting and the final stages of the proposed legislation will be debated at Westminster on 23 February.

London march

In Scotland, a member's bill by Labour backbencher Mike Watson to ban hunting with dogs is currently going through the first stage of parliamentary scrutiny.

The protest comes as a prelude to a big march being staged by the Countryside Alliance in London on 18 March.

Scottish Countryside Alliance director Allan Murray said of the Glasgow event: "This gathering is an ideal opportunity for people all over Scotland to show the strength of feeling at the dangers facing our rural communities.

"Country people are facing many threats, including high fuel prices, less public transport, threats to village post offices, and the reassessment of rural schools.

"The real fabric of our rural communities is under threat as never before."
