Snow and ice round-up
![]() Many schools are closed for a third day
The effects of three days of severe weather is causing problems across Scotland.
In Shetland the island's two main supermarkets are now running short of fresh produce. There have been no deliveries from the mainland since Saturday because of the disruption to the ferries. The islands' main hospital - the Gilbert Bain in Lerwick - is also running short of beds.
Train travel has also been seriously hampered in many parts. ScotRail has announced that, due to landslides between Larbert and Stirling, local services from Glasgow or Edinburgh to Dunblane will run only as far as Larbert, with a connecting bus to Stirling, Bridge of Allan and Dunblane. Travellers between Glasgow and Aberdeen or between Glasgow and Inverness are advised to go via Edinburgh. Glasgow - Aberdeen and Glasgow - Inverness trains will be unable to run south of Stirling. There are no services north of Inverness after two trains got stuck in 10ft snow drifts near Kinbrace. Services on the Edinburgh to Inverness line have also been subject to delays and cancellation following a derailment at Blair Atholl. Road closures Around 120 schools in Grampian are closed, many for a third day and there are also a number of closures at schools in Moray. Orkney schools that are closed include: Stromness, Sanday, Pierowalls in Westray, Papa Westray, Shapinsay, North Walls, The Hope, Burray, Dounby, Evie, Firth, Orphie, Stenness and Glaitness Aurrida. On the roads, conditions are reported to be poor in the far north of the country due to further heavy falls of snow.
In Aberdeenshire, road closures include: A939 Cockbridge to Tomintoul; A939 Ballater to Gairnshiel; A93 Braemar to Blairgowrie; A941 Rhynie to Dufftown; B974 Banchory to Fettercairn; B976 Crathie to Gairnshiel. In Perth and Kinross, main roads are clear of snow but they are very wet. Closed roads include: A93 at Spittal of Glenshee; A822 Dunkeld to Greenloaning one mile west of Dunkeld; A823 landslip, three miles from Gleneagles towards Glendevon; A924 Pitlochry to Bridge of Cally. In the Borders, a number of roads are closed due to flooding including the A699 at Springwood, Kelso and the A6089 Gordon to Whitburn road and some unclassified roads. In Strathclyde, the Lochlip road at Lochwinnoch is closed due to flooding; while the A77 Glasgow to Kilmarnock road is closed between Floak and the B764 Eaglesham Moor road. For air travellers, weather delays are expected at Sumburgh and Kirkwall, while Inverness Aiport is snow closed until 1930 GMT.
