Boyack backs tram moves
![]() Trams have proved to be a success in Manchester
Scottish Transport Minister Sarah Boyack has called on city councils to consider introducing trams to ease congestion.
She told a conference organised by the public transport group Transform Scotland that if tramways were integrated with buses, trains and pedestrian routes, they would be considered for central government funding. Experts told the Edinburgh conference about the success of new tramway systems in Manchester, Orleans in France and Karlsruhe in Germany. Ms Boyack said: "Light railways and trams could make a significant contribution to a Scottish integrated transport system - fitting in with and complementing other modes of urban transport.
"They can also contribute to a cleaner environment and improved quality of life in city centres. "We therefore in Scotland need to assess their practical advantages and their wider benefits. "Elsewhere in Europe many towns and cities have established successful light rail and tram systems. "In order to catch up, I would encourage local authorities to explore the potential for the development of such schemes." She added: "The Scottish Executive recognises this potential and is prepared to consider facilitating any serious approach for developing a scheme that seeks to bring improved services to the public." Ms Boyack called on local authorities to consider how the Scottish transport system could benefit from the experience of "those who have already secured what we are still striving for".
