Madonna and movie director Guy Ritchie were married at Skibo Castle on Friday night, the minister who conducted the ceremony has confirmed.

Rev Susan Brown, minister for Dornoch in the Highlands, said the couple had tied the knot.

"It did happen," Rev Brown told reporters outside her house.

The confirmation ended 12 hours of speculation as to whether the £1.5m ceremony had actually taken place.

Kilt clue: pop star Sting arrives in Highland dress

The wedding follows a two-year romance between the 42-year-old pop star and the 32-year-old director.

Dornoch has been the centre of a media whirlwind since it was confirmed earlier this month that the ceremony would take place in the Highland burgh.

Security at the castle - dubbed "Colditz" by locals - was ultra-tight, with guards using heat sensing equipment to detect photographers trying to hide in the grounds.

A number of paparazzi were ejected from the 7,000-acre estate.

Wedding guests arrived at the castle on Friday afternoon, with rock star Sting the first to be snapped by the assembled gathering of more than 100 members of the paparazzi, fans and media.

His wife Trudi Styler, who introduced the couple at a party, arrived separately in a chauffeur-driven limousine with three children.

Italian designer Donatella Versace, whose flight from Milan was diverted to Wick because of fog, later swept into Skibo Castle in a dark Range Rover.

Shakespeare in Love star Gwyneth Paltrow was said to be chief bridesmaid.

Stella McCartney, who designs for Paris fashion house Chloe, was believed to have created Madonna's wedding dress.

The roll-call of famous names tipped to have attended the ceremony also included Hollywood heart-throb George Clooney, and movie stars Robin Williams, Rupert Everett and Brad Pitt.

Rock stars Jon Bon Jovi and Bryan Adams were both spotted flying in to Inverness Airport for the event.

French photographer Jean-Baptiste Mondino, who took the pictures for Madonna's latest album, was rumoured to be the wedding photographer.

On Thursday, the couple's four-month-old son Rocco Ritchie was baptised in Dornoch Cathedral, five miles from Skibo Castle.

Police arrested two men following the baptism.

A 51-year-old was detained on Thursday evening after he tried to leave Dornoch Cathedral, and a 33-year-old was arrested in Dornoch in the early hours of Friday morning.

Northern Constabulary said the two men, both from the south of England, had been charged with a number of offences.

Both men were released on Friday evening and are due to appear at Dornoch Sheriff Court early next week.
