Part of the furniture

It's not hard to work out why Tony Blair went to an Ikea store today ... after all, he may soon need a new cabinet.

And the hour-long visit to the Croydon warehouse included breakfast with his vote-shopping partner, Gordon Brown. TB had bacon and baked beans, while GB stole the health high-ground with fruit salad and a croissant.

Who paid? The chancellor of course, but in the end the star-struck counter staff generously refused his crisp £20 note.

It seems Blair and Brown are joined at the hip and the moment. While Michael Howard has a DIY policy, Blair's adopting a DIWG strategy - Do It With Gordon.

Sounds like GB has been talking to Cherie recently about her freebies.

What kind of weirdo has just bacon and baked beans for breakfast? That can't be right. Surely?

TB's so wooden and with his thin veneer of respectability I'm amazed that the Ikea staff could find him at all in the midst of all the other stuff in the store, which, incidentally, also falls apart after 8 years.
Tony, Basingstoke, UK

I bought my New Labour Project, flat packed from IKEA eight years ago. When I got it home it didn't look anything like what was on the box. The instructions were not all that helpful either. They read, "...there are knowns you will not know, there are unknowns you will know... Things can only get better." I gave up quite early on. I've still got a load of Hoons, Hewitts, and Straw left over. At least the Brown bits worked. I think I will just hang on to it. Who knows, it might be worth something someday.
