Smiling, but saying nothing

By Mark Mardell
Chief political correspondent

POSTED: Tuesday 5 April, 1110BST

They're really off now. At least the prime minister is off to the Palace. He left Number 10 smiling but not saying anything.

Let's face it - most actual campaigns don't seem to swing many votes but the word you hear the most at Westminster is "volatile". Labour MPs who have been out leafleting report a strong mood of disgruntlement. The key to this election may be whether Labour can inspire, cajole, or frighten enough former supporters into backing them once again.
