The Public Bill Office is part of the department of the Clerk of the
House and deals with the passage of public bills through the House
of Commons.
Clerks in the office examine draft versions of both government and
private members' bills to make sure that they do not break any of
the rules of the House. They also give individual MPs help to draft
their bills and amendments.
Members give notice to this office of their intention to present or introduce bills. The office also arranges ballots for private members' bills and motions.
Staff from the Public Bill Office are appointed to act as clerks to standing committees and grand committees. In this capacity they advise the chairmen and members on correct procedure and practice.
