Tories dominate local elections in Surrey

Voters in six boroughs elected councillors as well as MPs

The political make-up of borough councils in Surrey remains largely unchanged after the local elections on Thursday.

The Conservatives did lose overall control of Mole Valley where they now have 18 seats to the Liberal Democrats 17 and there are six Independents.

No party has overall control in Woking where the Tories hold 18 seats and the Lib Dems 17, with one Independent.

Elsewhere, the Conservatives retained control of local authorities.

In Runnymede, they won 12 of the 14 contested wards with Runnymede Independent Residents taking two.

It means the other two main parties have no seats on the borough council with the Tories holding 36 and residents' associations six.

Seats held

Elmbridge voters elected Conservative councillors in 13 seats in the 20 wards where local polls were held, along with six residents' association candidates and two Liberal Democrats.

Conservatives now hold 55% of the seats on the council.

In Tandridge, the Conservatives held 13 out of 14 contested seats. The Lib Dems held the remaining seat in Warlingham East, Chelsham and Farleigh.

Overall, it means the Conservatives now have 33 seats compared to the Lib Dems' eight.

In Reigate and Banstead, the Tories also retained control of the borough council, winning 15 of the seats contested. seats.

The Lib Dems took one, with two seats going to residents' associations and one to the Greens.
