Just before 20 past seven on Tuesday evening, Gordon Brown came out of 10 Downing Street to announce his immediate resignation as Prime Minister.

Within 90 minutes, David Cameron had been to the Palace to request permission to form a coalition government with the Liberal Democrats, and was stepping inside Number 10.
