The perils of a general election campaign are well-known.

Long days on the doorstep, lots of take-aways and the risk of ear-ache from hearing the same political speech again and again....and again.

And then there's the danger of someone throwing an egg - as Radio 4's Martha Kearney found to her cost during the 1987 campaign, when she was following the then leader of the Liberal Party, David Steel.
