Darling's view of 80s budget cuts

The Chancellor has said he believes spending on the NHS, schools and police forces can be protected despite forecast cuts which could outstrip those made by Margaret Thatcher's 1980s government.

In the 1980s, a young Alistair Darling railed against her government's cuts, saying they were in order to fund an arms race.
