Harriet Harman has sought to reassure the public that ministers did not act in their own interests, following allegations that some were paid to influence government policy.

In a statement to the House of Commons on Monday, Mrs Harman said investigations by the relevant departments had found "no improper influence on government policy or ministerial decisions."

Stephen Byers is one of a number of MPs who has been accused of accepting money from companies to sway decisions.
